looking for robert bye

Im looking for any information about a relative of mine, his name was Robert Bye. I think he emigrated to Australia around 1880. He would have been about 20 and had lived in Brize Norton Oxfordshire until then. I have no more information, any ideas?

Hi Jane

This might be your Robert - the dates certainly fit. Unfortunately this record is not very forthcoming with other info.
Also found possible children for Robert with an Emily GARBETT. Can't actually find marriage or her death though.
Hope this is useful - all speculation of course but maybe something will ring a bell with you.

Good luck, let me know if there are any other leads I can look into for you.

Warm Regards
Cherilyn

Dear Cherilyn,
Thank you very much for taking the time and looking into the lost Robert Bye.I'll make a few more inquiries now I have something to go on.I really hope this is him. My mother, who is 80 ,can remember her mother saying that Robert wrote one letter to his mother when he arrived in Australia , but the family didn't hear from him again. It broke his mothers heart.
I need to know if he still has living relatives in Australia who might remember any family history.
Thanks again
Jane Inskipp

Many thanks for the information. Do you know if any of your ancesters came from Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England? I have managed to trace my family back to the seventeenth century but Robert is hard to track down.We know he got to Australia because he wrote a letter to his mother but was never heard of again. He was the youngest son of a large family and his mothers favorite. The story goes that it broke her heart. I think it must have been around 1880 but I'm not sure as I can't find any records as to which port or ship he left on or where in Australia he landed.
Any more info would be great.
Regards. Janie

Hi

I'm in Adelaide, South Australia and for about 12 yeas I have been offering free research about ancestors/family etc. who came to South Australia in the 1800's.

I saw your request on the Ancestry Message Board re a ROBERT BYE in Australia.

I did find a marriage of a ROBERT BYE and I am forwarding it to you, in case this is the ROBERT BYE you are looking for.

MARRIAGE

Robert Bye married Clara Elizabeth Pearn 3rd July 1889 in Tasmania, Australia.

I did search, but I could not find any children recorded as being born to robert & Clara.

It's not much, but it is the only Robert Bye request I have ever had.

I hope the above is of some interest to you.

Regards

Heather

Hi Heather,
Thank you for your help.
I had found a record of Bye's in Tasmania but had no more info.
Is it possible for you to look through immigration documents from your end. It's very difficult from here.
I don't have much to go on.I found Robert on the 1881 cencus in Birmingham England, age 20, so he must have left of Australia after that year. He must have taken an assisted passage as he wasn't well off.
Any info would be great.
Regards
Jane

Hello Jane,

Robert Bye arrived in Australia on the Hersperus in 1883. He was listed as a single man, ag. labourer. This is not the same Robert Bye, farmer that lived in Tasmania. Nor is he the same Robert Bye, Miner that lived in Bendigo.

He married an Aboriginal woman named Emily (as above with several surnames). It appears he may not have lived with her for much of the time as she spend a fair portion of her life at Yelta Mission - two of her children were born there. Indeed they may not have been legally married.

There was another Emily Bye living in Mildura at the time and she was married to a Richard Bye - both R. Bye - so the records get quite confusing as to who was who.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cynthja,

This from mollipops, in 2004....

"Also found possible children for Robert BYE with an Emily GARBETT. Can't actually find marriage or her death though."

Here is Emily's death registration in January, 1955, in Bourke, NSW.

6802/1955 BYE EMILY HARRIEVETT NOT KNOWN (District) BOURKE

However, her obituary states that she was born in Birmingham, England, therefore, not an Aboriginal woman.

Hi Anne Grant,

I cannot see a birth for Ernest BYE and Robert BYE, as brothers, however, there is every chance that they are brothers, and Robert's birth has not been transcribed, or registered.

I found this story about a Robert Roy BYE, born about 1903, a native of Mildura; who might be the brother of your grandfather, Ernest Murray BYE.

Marriage:
13383/1932 BYE ROBERT R ANDERSON HELENA REDFERN

Divorce, in April, 1943, The Truth, Sydney, 18 April 1943:

If you purchased the 20.01.1955, death certificate of Ernest BYE's mother, Emily
GARBUTT/BYE, registered at Bourke, NSW, hopefully the children, are listed. However, her obituary, does not list a Robert BYE, as a child, but he may have been deceased by then, as Emily was aged 97 years.
