I have a great-great grandmother, Sarah Baker, born in 1852 that I suspect was adopted into her family. Throughout her childhood, census records list her as a daughter of William H. Baker and Elvira (Luster) Baker, and Sarah is always listed last and out of chronological order from the rest of the children in her family. The census records say she was born in Tennessee, but as an adult, the census records (her's and her children's) list her birth place as Illinois.

I don't know where to locate any information that would confirm my suspicion. I would really like help if anyone knows where I can look. I have no money to hire researchers so if there are online records or indexes I could browse it would be helpful.
