I am looking for information about the ancestors of Daniel Edwin Gregory who was born in Jackson County in May 1852 and died in Richland County (Olney) in August 1944. The only information I’ve found about his parents are from his Illinois death record, which shows them to be George and Easter Gregory. I have found these two individuals in the 1850 Federal census, ages 28 and 20 respectively, in the South District of Jackson County with a daughter, Mary C. Gregory age 2. The are listed in the census after two other Gregory families, one headed by Christiana (Christina?) Gregory, age 37, and the other headed by Alford Gregory, age 22. From some research I’m pretty sure that Alford is Cristiana’s son (the elder Gregory, John Isaac, appears to have died in 1849) and that they came from North Carolina. I’ve found no clear link between the George Gregory family and these other two Gregory neighbors other than a link suggested in another Ancestry.com tree that has no supportive citation.
I cannot find any of the four Gregory’s of interest (George, Easter, Mary, and Daniel) in the 1860 census. The only one of the four I can clearly identify in the 1870 census is Daniel, age 19, living with the Charles and Sarah Smith family in Union Precinct of Union County, and then his marriage to (recently divorced) Massey Jane May Smith, my great-great grandmother, in 1873, also in Union County. I can track him and his immediate family from there on until his death, but I really want to know about his ancestors.
