HENRY CLAY SMITH enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 20, l861 from Pitt County, North Carolina. He was a Private in Company E - 27th Regiment - Infantry (State Troops). He was at Camp Gatlin, North Carolina, through l862. He was also in Marlboro, North or South Carolina. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, Virgina, on March 25, l865, and was listed as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Md. He arrived at City Point, Virginia, on April 2, l865. HENRY CLAY SMITH was released on June 20, l865, at which time he took the Oath of Allegiance. On his papers, it states his place of residence as Greene County, North Carolina. His description was: Complexion: light; hair: light; eyes: blue; height: 5 ft 9-l/2 in.

After the Civil War HENRY CLAY SMITH came to Sabine County and married MARY ANN MORRIS, daughter of SHADRACH MORRIS and MARY SARAH NELSON. In the pension application, she states that she and HENRY CLAY SMITH were married on September l4, l868.

According to the pension application, J. M. WALLER and B. F. MORRIS state that HENRY CLAY SMITH rendered valuable service and he was wounded in the right hip during the war which made him a cripple.
