Jeronimo Bacarel could have been my distant relative. I found his name by searching through
Peter Boy-Bowman's two volumes of the Indice Geobiografico de Cuarenta mil Pobladores Espanoles de America en el Siglio XVI.
17,000 names of soldiers and colonists are listed, not only Spanish conquistadors, but Italians, French, Dutch, German, Scot, Portuguese, Greek and some Irish, who served in Spanish forces. It is written entirely in Spanish.

From this source I learned that Jeronimo Bacarel was from Palermo, Sicily and arrived in Peru in 1535. I have searched the internet for more information as to his life in the New World, but have uncovered nothing. So I don't know if he was a conquistador, or colonist, scoundrel or settler.

Where should my next search begin?
