Connie--

A family that has a certain surname does not mean that they are of a certain religion!
exp.:
Austrian Emperor of late 1800s "got on to " members of the "Lost Tribes" that wouldn't adopt a surname,"...adopt a surname or get out of my kingdom!".
Surnames for the Non-Noble families started in 1300. So, it took 500 years for all the families of Europe to finally adopt a surname! I imagine they grabbed the first name that they saw/heard in order to not be evicted from their "homeland".

Surnames were obtained,at first, by purchase; then other means and as a final method...the Royal Auctioneer and his friends chose 'far-out' names for the real-peasants who had nothing to offer.

I have a Petter ZENTNER,b. 1490,that dropped the 't' for his descendants...some recording/searching Priests made some entry errors and one family had more than one spelling:
ZENNER,ZEIMER,ZERMER & back to ZENNER >>>>>//>>Today !

My line is to Martin ZENTNER,b, 1496,to Switz (1520) and stays ZENTNER thru my family!

Interested in this dialogue...anyone?

I am interested in origin of Zentner surname. My GGgrandfather's first wife's maiden was listed as Zentner in Evangelical Church of Chillicothe, Ohio church records in 1855. I cant find any info except her place of birth, listed as "Germany" on 1870 census. I would appreciate any help on this matter. I am trying to find her parents.

Philip BONN married Barbara ZENTNER in 1855, Chillicothe, Ohio. They had 2 sons - Peter b. 1856 and John BONN b. 1859. The church records only list this marriage and not the births of either son. Barbara died in 1861. Philip applied for citi. in 1852 in Chillicothe. I cant locate any other Zentners in Chillicothe in 1850 or 1860 census. I have no idea when she immigrated and if she was with parents or not. Barbara's d.o.b. is 12-31-1822, she died on 1-22-1861.

I'm searching for info on ancestors of the Oswalds (or Oswalts). Some American Oswalds are linked with a count of LèOWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-VIRNEBURG of Prussia and other royalty. Need more info on the name of Leowenstein or Lowenstein. Also, regarding Jewish ancestry of Europe: There often were Jewish men and women of influence who were involved in the running of the countries. Many of them married non-Jewish royalty. (This was in the heyday of their popularity.) I wouldn't discount the possibility of a Jewish-sounding surname being linked with people with Jewish heritage. Yes, it's true that people often picked their surnames. But I suspect many did so with as much care as any person today would do. Many Jews changed their names to "less Jewish sounding ones" after coming to America (and elsewhere) for safety purposes.

where are you living now ?

This is one source for the surname ZENDER :

Petter ZENTNER, b. 1490,?, Listed in Rehlingen,Duchy Lothringen, 1519 as Tax Collector !
When his first son was born, 1510, he changed their surname to ZENNER(S)(ZENDER)! A GrndSon added "S" to become ZENNERS.
Source: "ZENNER familiebuch", compiled by Rudolf ZENNER, Merzig,Germany. Bernard ZENNER, Gent,Be., sent me copies of a few pages of the start of his family book and I met with him at a Int'l Trade Show, Orlando, FL last year.
That's what I know of this surname.
Petter ZENTNER may be related to Martin ZENTNER,b. 1496,?, and a Taxman in Elm, Kt Glarus,Switz, 1520 for the Abbey of Säckingen,Baden...My Line !!
