Hi,
I'm about to begin what looks to be a pretty big task of at least tracing my name back a few generations, and I'd like to start with this:
My family has always pronounced it with a hard 'a' so that it sounds like "Kay-dee". Is this the universal pronounciation? Or do some pronounce it "Kee-dee" (everyone always trys... Lord only knows how many times I've said "No, Kay-dee")
BTW: I'm in Oregon, the son of Todd and Pam, Todd the son of Robert and Verlee. If you run accross the name Verlee in any of your records, email me if you could (long shot, I know) because you may have done a lot of my work for me ;-)
Thanks again,
Josh

"Once a certain Mrs Tweedie Asked a man the way to Keedy The man replied"Excuse me lady The proper name of the place is Keady"
This is taken from a local history book about Keady, Co. Armagh, N.Ireland and confirms the pronunciation you use being a close approximation to the original Irish "ceid(h)e"

My family all pronounces Keady, kay-dee, with the exception of one of my uncles, who gave in to everyone saying key-dee. We have had some people try to pronounce it ked-ee. My family is mostly located in upstate New York. My grandparents were Martin and Mary Keady, ggrandparents John Walter and Margaret Keady; gggrandparents John Thomas and Mary Keady. John Thomas Keady came to the states from Ireland in the 1840's. Good luck on your search. Kris

In my family, it's the same pronounciation as yours. Not easy since everyone else wants it to be keeeeedy! :)

My family have lived in and around Keady, County Armagh, N. Ireland for the past four generations. The town is referred to exclusively as "Kaydee". Only newer residents from outside the area will pronounce it as Keedee, and locals will invariably draw attention to the error of their ways very quickly indeed!!!

We say Key-dee. I am from the galway line, a lot of keady's come from near headford in galway. My grandad (born 1920ish) was william keady.

Back in the 40s, in Greenville, MS, my dad, Michael John Keady built a cabin cruiser in the sideyard and named it "The Kaydees". We had great fun on that boat!

For a starter, you're pronouncing it correctly! Don't let anyone tell you differently! My E-mail address is the Irish spelling of our name. As far as I can tell, if a Keady goes back far enough, he'll(or she'll) end up in Galway, Ireland, whether they like it, or not! More specifically, the name is identified as coming from the Connemara region. There are still quite a few remaining, but, unfortunately for them, most pronounce it as "Kee-dy"...say a prayer for them! Good luck in your search... return, especially near the village of "Spiddal".

I am married to an Oregon Keady (Kay-dee) is how I was told to say it. My husband is a descendant of William Keady of Waldport, OR and we are tracing the tree now. I don't have much info other than the bits and pieces I have found online.
