Biography of Mary Ellen Moore Johnson

Mary Ellen Moore Johnson, daughter of Andrew Alonzo Moore, a school teacher and Sarah Wasson Moore, also a school teacher, was born October 9th, 1893, near Ethel(Attala County) Mississippi. She was one of five children. She attended school at Shady Grove, Mississippi. She was graduated from Kosciusko High School, where she was a member of the Eutopian and Shakespearian Clubs. She was baptized Novemeber 11, 1902 and joined the Methodist Church there. She taught school on Argola and Tabernacle Communities near Ethel, Mississippi. She organized the Epworth League at the Ethel Methodist Church in 1914 which has continued since and is now Methodist Youth Fellowship.

She was married to Rass Lemuel Johnson, November 8, 1914, who was graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School. They lived in Algoma, Mississippi.

In 1918, they moved to Bassett, Arkansas where the doctor entered general practice. They joined the Bassett Church and became active members. Mrs. Johnson was a faithful and devoted member. She served as president of the Woman’s Auxiliary and as chairman of the various “causes”. She gave generously, never turning down a request from the church.

Doctor Johnson was ordained and became an Elder in the Bassett Church in 1940. Their children, eleven in number, with two having died in infancy, are: Edwina Juanita, Robert Newton, Mary Jane, Frances Bain, Sara Catherine, David Lemuel, Donna Sue, Lonnie Moore and Janice Isabel. They have 22 grandchildren.

Dr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Blytheville in January 1949. They became members of the First Presbyterian Church. Their children are also active members.

Dr. Johnson was installed as an elder June 10, 1951. Mrs. Johnson is a member of the Blytheville Woman’s Club and the Garden Club.

She has served the women of the church as a Circle Chairman, Bible study leader, White Cross Chairman and is a member of the Bereen Bible Class. She has an outstanding record in Christian stewardship. In the words of George McDonald, “Working with God.” This may be said by Mary Ellen Johnson, “If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God.”
