Notes: Harrison N. Hiles, national secretary of the Townsend Plan while that organization had its headquarters here, died yesterday in New York City. He was 82.
A native of Canton, Ohio, Mr. Hiles was educated here but moved away as a young man.
In 1935 at age 60 he joined the Townsend Plan in Washington and moved with its headquarters to Chicago, Cleveland and back to Washington last year. He retired as secretary last spring.
The Townsend Plan gained some popular support but no legislative backing during the 1930s.
It called for the government to give each citizen over 65 a pension of $82.00 a month, to be spent during the month in which it was given.
He and his wife, Alice, lived in Hotel Commodore here and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in this city. She predeceased him.
A son, Sterling J. of New York City, and two brothers survive him.
