I'm hoping that someone might have information on my Cunningham family line that hailed from County Westmeath. I'm new to researching my genealogy in Ireland, and I'd very much appreciate any advice or information you might be able to offer.
From what I've learned so far, census records weren't kept in Ireland until about 1901 so the primary genealogy sources are church records. If I could get the name of the parish my great-grandparents belonged to in Ireland, I could write, but unfortunately I don't have the parish name.
I am trying to learn about the family of John Cunningham, my great-grandfather, who was born Aug. 19, 1863 in Westmeath. This is according to records of St. John the Evangelist Church, Honesdale, Pennsylvania, which he joined when he came to the U.S. The parish records note that his father's name was Thomas J. Cunningham, who remained in Ireland; his (Thomas') wife's name was not listed.
St. John's records also state that John Cunningham married a Catherine Nolan, 1866-1894, in Ireland (unknown year). With their son Thomas, they came to this country sometime before 1886, since their second child, James, was born in Honesdale in that year.
Again, if anyone out there has any information, I'd be most grateful. My e-mail is
