I am a descendant of Amos Eldridge, b. abt. 1839, d. 1921, probably in Canandaigua, Ontario, NY. I have one census record in which Amos, wife Sarah E, and daughters Clara and Flora (my great grandmother) are living in Victor, Yates, NY in 1880. Also listed as stepson is William H Lane age 21, born in Wisconsin abt. 1859.
I recently discovered a US census record for 1860 from Whitewater, Walworth, Wisconsin in which William, aged 3, is listed in the household of John L (44) and Sarah J Lane (40), along with Sarah E (20) and David L (18). I believe Sarah E is my gr gr grandmother, the daughter of Chancy and Thankful Root, and might be mother of William, and eventually, wife of Amos (m about 1872). There is a reference in a Root ancestry that Sarah married a "Daniel" Lane from Wisconsin. Perhaps this is the David from the 1850 census, a transcription error?
In an 1870 US census of Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, Willie (aged 9) and Carrie (5) Lane are listed in the household of Chancy Root, perhaps his grandson and grandaughter? In this census, however, the place of birth for William is given as NY.
