Pardon my lack of Kansas history. I have been tracing a family member who married a John Kauffman in 1869 in Chester co. PA and turned up on the 1880 census in Pawnee township, Pawnee co. Kansas. They did not stay long and returned to Ohio within a few years. Can anyone share what was happening in this region in 1880 that would encourage a young couple with very young children to make this move? I see there is a Fort. Were Army members moved with their families? Thanks for your help.
