Dear “Cousin,”
When I initially announced the date and location for the 5th Biannual Fleniken/Flenniken Family Reunion [16-18 August 2013, Uniontown Holiday Inn, Uniontown PA], I promised to send “more details later.” Now that the New Year has begun, it is time to fulfill that promise.
The Uniontown Holiday Inn and Conference Center is now accepting room reservations. Guest room rates are $99 per night, subject to applicable tax, to those who identify themselves as attending the Flenniken Reunion. Room reservations should be made directly with the Uniontown Holiday Inn (or other location of your choice) by calling 724-437-2816 [Fax- 724-438-3172]. In order to insure that you receive the negotiated rates, it is necessary for reservations to be made by Wednesday, July 17, 2013.
The cost of the Reunion, including the Saturday Buffet, is $25.00 per adult [family rate for each child: under 5 years old, no charge; between 5-10 years old, $5.00; between 10-15 years old, $15.00]. I will begin accepting payment immediately. Along with your check, please include the name of each person included in your payment. Please also include contact information for each person [so a roster can be prepared to be given everyone in attendance]: (1) mailing address, (2) telephone number, (3) e-mail address (if applicable). Make your check payable and send to:
John F. Flenniken
1010 Township Road 262
Bloomingdale OH 43910
(Any additional donation to help defray the incidental expenses associated with the reunion will be gratefully accepted!)
An itinerary for the three-day reunion is being developed and will be made available in late spring or early summer. A hospitality room has been reserved for Friday afternoon [August 16] and evening for a get-acquainted get-together. The Reunion Meeting will be called to order at 10 a.m. Saturday morning [August 17] with a lunch buffet served at noon. Individual/family photos will be taken before lunch; a group photo will be taken following lunch. A guided tour as well as a self-guided driving tour of the Carmichaels area—the homeland of our ancestors, 17 miles (30 minutes) West of Uniontown—is being refined and directions to additional points of interest in Western Pennsylvania will be made available.
The Guided tour and/or Self-guided driving tour are proposed for Sunday [August 18], following optional church services. The Guided tour will include lunch at the historic Harley Inn at 12:00 p.m., tour of the Flenniken Library at 1:30 p.m. (special opening), the Greene Academy (special opening and tour), the Laurel Point Cemetery, and the Glades Church and Cemetery where John, the Signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, is interred (along with many ancestors of the Northern Branch of the Flenniken Family).
Note: We will take reservations for the historic Hartley Inn Sunday lunch on Friday evening at the get-together or no later than the 10:00 a.m. meeting Saturday morning. In addition, for anyone interested, a new Glades Cemetery Drawing/Map with names is (will be) available for $25 – checks to be made payable to The Glades Cemetery, c/o Paul McMinn; all proceeds will go toward the maintenance of the cemetery.
If you plan to fly in to the Pittsburgh International Airport, rent a vehicle, and need directions to Uniontown, please let me know. Perhaps those arriving at the Airport and planning to rent a vehicle can “car pool” to Uniontown (60 miles SE of the airport) – I will try to “link” you with others who may appreciate a ride to Uniontown if you provide me with arrival/departure information and/or request a ride [no guarantee of success on this attempt!].
As a summary of the important information, I will attach the same flyer-type announcement regarding the 2013 reunion that I sent earlier. Please feel free to forward this informationlou to anyone who might have an interest in becoming a part of the Flenniken-descendants reunion. Thanks to all of you who responded to the initial announcement. I look forward to hearing from you with suggestions or questions, and most especially I look forward to greeting you in August.
With every good wish for a Happy New Year,
-- John Flenniken
