My great grandfather who is known to me as Ronald Mcdonald is supposed to have served in the Crimean War and may have changed his name. I dont't know what regiment, He was born in Scotland either in 1814 or 1829 or 1830. I have the information that he served in India in the 3rd European Indian regeiment and married there to Elizabeth Stanley in 1855. They had 3 children born in India, Henry, Margaret, and Mary Ann. My problem is I don,t know the British Regiment nameor number in the Crimea or his exact birth date. I have found family letters saying his last name could have been Sutter, Souter, or Soutar. He supposedly served 21 years in the British military and returned to England 1861 or1862. Ineed help.

The Indian Mutiny medal roll has a #209 Sergeant Ronald McDonald of the 3rd Madras Fusiliers awarded a Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India. They dropped 'European' in 1858-59. Before then they came under the East India Company. In 1861 they were renamed - 108th Regiment of Foot.

He may have left because of these changes, rather than deserted. The National Archives has information starting 1863. Before then you need to contact fibis.org as they may have his service record.
