Harris and Joiner Families of Sumter and Early Counties

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 6:33AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Harris, Joiner
Sarah Ann Harris married Wiley C Joiner on 4 Oct 1849, in Sumter County. Wiley is listed on all records I can find as Wiley or Wiley C but some other researchers have him on their tree as William. I’m not sure that is accurate since their son is named Wiley. Sarah Ann Harris is the daughter of Stephen Harris and Phebe Hawkins who lived in Sumter since the 1830s or longer. Sarah is my 3rd great grand aunt.

According to census records, the children born to Sarah and Wiley were:
Sarah J 1850-1922
Charity A 1856?
Lettice 1858
Burrell 1860-1903
John W 1860
Wiley L 1864

There may have been more children and some of these names and dates may be incorrectly transcribed in the census records. .

Wiley served in Cobb's Legion in Company A during the Civil War going in as a private and leaving with the rank of sergeant. That's all I know so far about him.

I'm looking for anyone who has access to the local records who can help me with this family.

Also, I would like to work on the Stephen Harris and Phebe Hawkins records as well. I have a copy of their marriage record dated 20 January 1825 from Pulaski County. But they were in Sumter by 1840. Unfortunately, Stephen passed away before 1850 as Phebe is widowed in District 29, Sumter, Georgia. by 1878, Phebe moved to Early County, Georgia so I assume she is buried in that county on the property of what may be Stephen's brother, Joshua. I would love to find more information on Stephen's death as well as any other records we might find there in Sumter, Pulaski or Early Counties.

If anyone can help with local records, please contact me.

Thank you!
