I'm trying to locate more information about my grandmother, Marion Humphrey, and I've run across some discrepancies.
According to a 1920 census, her mother is listed as Effa Humphrey, 48.
According to a 1910 census, her mother is listed as Effie Humphrey, 38 with father Edward J. Humphrey, 41
All of that matches up.
The problem I've run into is the marriage record. What I was able to find was that Effie S. Marshall (who is listed as the maiden name in the 1910 census) and Edward J Humphrey married on October 13, 1887. If this is the correct marriage record, according to the 1910/1920 records, Effie should be 15 and Edward, 20. However, that does not match up with the marriage record. Instead, it shows Effie as being 19 and Edward, 26.
It could very well be these are different people. Where I'm stumped though, is Effa is listed as born in PA on the census record and on the marriage record. Edward J is listed as born in MI on the census record and on the marriage record.
I wonder if Effie was adopted? The marriage record shows her as a Marshall. I've found previous census records (1870 & 1880) showing Effie as a Marshall. Both attest to her DOB being 1868. But, I also found Effa Rose in an 1880 census showing a DOB of 1868.
I can't find any marriage record showing Edward J Humphrey marrying a Effie Rose. However, as Charles and Effie Rose are listed as in-laws to Edward in the 1910 census, I wonder if the Roses were her biological parents and the Marshalls were her adoptive parents?
One thing that continues to confuse me is the DOB.... as marriage and earlier census records show Effie Marshall/Rose being born in 1868 but later census records (i.e., 1910, 1920) show Effie being born in 1872. Effa's Mom, Effa Rose's DOB according to the 1910 census doesn't match with the 1880 census either.
I do know that Effie and Edward J Humphrey were my grandmother's parents as they are named in her marriage announcement.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
