Sinking of the MONTEVIDEO MARU (1st July 1942)

Surnames: Lamont
My uncle, Stephen Murphy Lamont, was reported as having lost his life when this vessel was sunk by an American submarine as it was on its way to Japan with over a thousand pow`s and civilians.
The more I seem to find out about the events surrounding the sinking and the personnel who were supposedly on board, the more mysterious it seems to become.
Was your relative waiting for someone to return from New Britain and Rabaul area in particular? Was it many years after the event that the person was finally shown to have been on board? Are there any available documents to show who was actually on board?
I am not looking to stir-up any hornet`s nests, just interested in all the possibilities.
My uncle was PM 1325 Stephen Lamont and he was a Coastwatcher on Anir. I am familiar with his service history, would just like to know if he was a POW in Rabaul before boarding the Montevideo Maru at Simpson Harbour.
Any information would be gratefully received.
Best wishes from Bob Brindle, Nottinghamshire, England.
