Looking for info on a George Wendell Phillips. Born in Salamanca, Cattaraugus County, New York on November 21, 1887. He attended Chamberlain Military Institute in Randolph, New York as a youth. By 1917 he lived in North Tonawanda in Niagara County, New York, and worded as a hotel clerk at Reed House in Erie, Pennsylvania. The attached photo was taken either during WWI or perhaps earlier, when he was at Chamberlain.
His father, who may have been named George also, apparently passed away by the 1900 census, as his mother Minnie is listed as a widow, and George was her only living child. Somehow George met a young woman from Florida named Francis Norton. George was quite close to his mother, Minnie, and after he and Francis were married, it appears that they lived with her in New York. George and Francis had a daughter in Pennsylvania in 1921 and named her “Minnie.”
Now the story gets murky… By 1924, Francis was back in Florida, giving birth to a son, Robert Thomas who never knew his father. Francis remarried several times, but she had no more children. But—what happened to George Wendell Phillips?? It is quite a common name, which makes it harder.
