My GGGrandparents, Thomas J. and Margaret COVE STOKES moved into Pepin Co. about 1860. Initially in the Bear Creek area and then into Durand. Thomas was a carpenter, farmer and owned the Eagle Hotel in Durand at one time. Oliver, their youngest son, my G/Grandfather married Myra Catura of Arkansaw. Their son, my Grandfather, William married Ann Kainz of Durand. My mother Goldeene Stokes and my uncle Lyle Stokes were both born in Durand.

Thomas married two more times and also had a large family with his second wife Huldah Taplin. This third wife was Arethusa Hughes, whom he married fairly late in life.
