Hello. I am trying to trace where my ancestors may have lived , worked and died after the 1860 census.
The family i am looking for is Patrick Hyland, b abt 1838-40 in Ireland. His wife Margaret Johnston b abt 1840 in Ireland also.
I have only found one living son so far James Hyland, he was born Dec 1858 in NJ.
The problem i have is, the family is on the 1860 census listed as Hilland not Hyland living in NJ with elder son Martin who died in early age and James aged 2 ( Hoping this is the same family).
Then there is no trace of the family on the 1870 census, which i find quite odd. James then re appears on the 1880 census with his own family, wife Margaret and son John living in Brooklyn, NY.
James died 1890.
I am now thinking that something may have happened within the family or maybe a split or death for the family not to show as whole family on the 1870 census.
Apart from Fulton history is there any other source i could use to discover wether the parents had died or divorced between 1860 and 1870?
There are plenty of Margaret and Patrick Hyland's , however i don't seem to be able to match them with this family. I only know of the 2 sons Martin & James, don't seem to be able to find other children.
Apart from James' birth, i find no trace of a marriage for Patrick and Margaret or their son James and no death notices.
Kind regards
Janette ( United Kingdom)
