Researching BURGESS surname with Cherokee and or Chickasaw ties. According to "Cherokee Roots" Volume 1, Eastern Cherokee Rolls, by Bob Blankenship the Burgess surname is listed on serveral rolls.
Emigration Roll of 1817 lists EDWARD, JOHN, RICHARD AND WILLIAM. Which means they filed to emigrate to Arkansas country and after the treaties in 1828 onto Oklahoma.
Also a WILLIAM BURGESS is listed on the Reservation Roll of 1817. Which means he chose to stay in the east desiring a 640 acre tract of land in lieu of removing to Arkansas. "In the east" means east of the Mississippi river.
My BURGESS line has connections to the Cherokee through the SMITH line. However it was a large family and possible more connections. EMMET STARR also has listed several BURGESS lines connected to the Cherokee Indians in his book "The History of the Cherokee Indians."
Would like very much to connect with anyone with more information on this BURGESS line.
I can connect directly to 1790 through 1880 the Burgess family in the following states: NC, AL, GA, TN and TX.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
