CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
In the Name of God Amen May 24th 1779 I John Steel Sen. Minister of Carlisle of Cumberland in the County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania being apprehensive that my present disorder will insue (?) in death and while of a disposing mind and memory judge it my duty to dispose of my worldly Estate which I do in the manner following, I, e, I order all my just debts and legal debts to be paid. I order the Twenty (?) pounds Mr. McAlister intrusted Samuel Laird and me with for the use of the poor and now in my hand to be Delivered to said Laird. I leave and bequeath to my Children in the following Proportions, To my Daughter Lydia's Children by Robert Sample four hundred Pounds, to my Son John and his Childen six hundred Pounds, two hundred to himself & four hundred to his Children., To Elisabeth McKinley two hundred Pounds and four hundred to her Children, To my Daughter Magt, three hundred Pounds and three hundred to her Children, To Mary and Sarah to each four hundred Pounds. To Robert and Andw to each six hundred Pounds, to Steel McClean two hundred and fifty Pounds and to my Daughter Jean six hundred Pounds~ as to the sums bequeathed to my grand Children it is my Will that if their(?)Parents shall give bond and security to the Orphans Court they may have the managery of their(?) Children, Bequesthment, except in the case of my Daughter Margaret whose share and the allowance made to her Children I order to be put out on interest and the Interest of the whole yearly given to her in such necessariies as She shall want and this so long as she shall live, again these my bequeathments to my grandChildren are to be considered or intended & designed not only for such as are now in Being, but such as my Children may have as Legal Issue, and if any child __ all die before it arrive at full age, his other share & proportion is to be equally Divided among the Surviving Brothers and Sisters, and each of my Grand Children is to have their proportion when they are of age. I bequeath to Jn my watch and Cain, and to Robert and Andw to each one of my fowling pieces, all of my wearing apparel, and to each of them a Bed & Bedcloths. I leave to my Daughter Jean a milch Cow, all of her mother's Cloths and Sadle and ring & Bed and it's furniture, i.e. a pair of Blankets, a pair of sheets and Coverlid as she shall chose. I leave and bequeath to my Sons John Robert & Andw my house and lot in Carlisle and Plantation at Bedford and I order that said House & Lot & Plantation be rented out by my Ex. & Trustees for Six years from the first of April next yr. House and Lot yearly and the Plantation for Six years, the rents to be equally divided among them for said Term Except so much as shall be necessary to defend my Rights to said Plantation Agst the Claims and Prevention of any other and if my Son Robt incline to improve on said Plantation I recommend to my Executors and Trustees to Encourage him, and further it is my will and appointment that if said Sons John Robt and Andw at the Expiration of six years from April next shall with the consent & approbation of my Execrs. and Trustees agree upon a division of said house and Lot & Plantation each shall Transfer & Convey to the other. But if they shall not agree, I order House & Lot & Plantation to be sold at open & fair Vendue and equally divided and if any or either of John Robt and Andw shall die before this division leaving no Legal issue, the proportion of sd Son who shall die shall be divided Equally among all my Children allowing the Children of a deceased Parent to represent and succeed to its Parents right. I leave and bequeath to my Daughter Jean for her own use and the use of my Daughter Margt my half of the House and Lot as I now possess it and order that my son John perform to her the Stipulations of the Lease as well as unto me. I also allow her for herself and her Sister Margt a sufficiency of Wheat Rye Corn and Potatoes and also for Andw and Steel McClean, if Andrew be no immediately bound out to Lessor of Trade which I recommend to my Execut and Trustees. A Sufficiency also of meat: the grain to be taken of the Crop on the glade (?) and at the Expiration of this year when my sons Lease Ends; if he shall rent said House again it is my Will that The said Jean shall have allowed her the five (?) back rooms above Stairs __ use of the Kitchen & Cellers for which she shall pay such Part of the Rent as the Exc & Trustees shall judge fit. I Leave Steel McClean under the care of Daughter Jean and allow her the Interest accruing upon _ Steels Share for his support & Education. I bequeath to said Jean __ time of the bound girl, the dresser furniture, a Pot, the washing tubs & milk vessels and if sd Daughter shall die in minority or without Legal Issue her share is to be Equally divided among the surviving Brothers & Sisters yet reserving to her a right of bequeathing a __ as she shall Judge Proper. If after the above Legacies there shall be a residue, I order it to be divided into nine shares Equal, one for each of my Children, allowing Steel McCleans portion to be augmented by fifty Pounds,. It is my will & desire to my Exrs and Trustees To Cause a small square log house of __ by 16 and 8 in hight __ __ __ Corner Chimney of Stone to be built on my third of the Lot adjoining Jos Wallace which part of Lot and House so Erected I Leave and bequeath to my Daughter Margt & her Children at her decease. I Leave and bequeath to my Daughter Jean a Chest of Drawers, a Tea Table, 8 Walnut Charis, a pair of hand Irons, shovel and tongues, and to Steel McClean a pair of Silver Buckles & to my Son Andw a pair of Silver Buckles, and I likewise order that Jean have Two Brass Candlesticks & Snuffers. I order all of my Effects & Chatles not bequeathed, Viz. Books house furniture Cattle to be sold. Except a Milk Cow for my Daughter Margt and I appoint John Agne__ Saml Laird John Creigh and Ephraim Steel together with my son John to be Exns of this my last Will and Testament and I do Impower Execns to Sell and make Legal Conveyances as there shall be occasion. I also appoint sd Exrs to be guardians and Trustees and if any one or more of them shall Cease to discharge this Trust which I commit to them and rquest them to accept, it is my will that the other Execr and Trustees Chuse one or more __ the apporbation of the Orphans Court to supply __place and I order that inall deliberations Sales & giving Conveyances three of sd Trustees shall be de_- sufficient and do in an Especial manner recommend to them my Daughter Margt & Andrw and so revoking all other wills by me heretofore made I do Constitute make ordain and declare this to be my last Will in Testimony whereof I have herunto set my hand and Seal the Day and year above written.

A Codicil made the 28th Day of June A.D. 1779 Witnesseth that in the Article of the above Will Respecting the House and Lot in Carlisle wherein I now Live when the Six Years within mentioned are Expired at which time my youngest Son will be of age and during which time said House is to be yearly Rented, if my said Sons cannot agree with the approbation of the other Trustees and Executors to Settle the Division of said House and Lot and Plantation at Bedford, it is my Will & appointment that the Trustees my Son John Excepted shall chose three Impartial Men to Value the said House and Lot and my Son John shall have the right of Purchasing the Same at the value accordingly. hE Paying two thirds of said Value to his Brothers in Two years after my Youngest Son is of age, and if either or both of my Sons Robert or Andrew shall die without Lawful Issue before said divisions then his or their Shares of said House and Lot shall be divided Equally among all my Children or their Legal Representatives John not excepted. As to the Plantation at Bedford I allow it to be valued in Like Manner as the House and Lot, andmy two youngest Sons to take it at the Value paying on third thereof to my Son John and if they do not chuse to take it in that manner, I will that it shall be Sold at Pulbic Vendue, and the money equally divided among said three Sons; as to the annuity of thirty five Pounds for thirteen yers after my Decease I order it to be yearly divided in the following manner, to wit, Ten Pounds to my Daughter Margt. The Remainder between John, Robert, Andrew, Jean and Steel McClean which annuity ariseth from the Widows Fund. Margarets Share to approporated to her Use by the Execrs as in the foregoing Will as to the money by Covenant due for my Improvements on the ___ I remitt it to the Congregation they allowing the benefit for the Present Year for the Use of my Family. A Codicil Made the fourth day of July A.D. 1779 _____that the Shares left to Mary and Sarah be put to Interest by the guardians within mentioned and the Interest thereof yearly given to them during their natural life and at their Death the Principal shares of either of them to be given to their children and if any of the said Guardians should die or refuse to act as such it is my devise and request that the Orphans
Court do appoint Proper persons to act in that Room(?) and Stead of such as shall so die or refuse to act. To Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal The Day and year above written

Be it remembered that on the 12th Day of February A.D. 1780 The Tesament and last Will of John Steel Sen. Minister of Carlisle Deceased was Legally Proved of which the foregoing Record is a True Copy. And Letters Testamentary Issued in Common Form on the __Day of ___ Ammo Dominity To John Steel, John Agnew, Samuel Laird and Ephraim Steel four of the Executors therein mentioned Inventory and account to be exhibited into the Registers Office in the Borough of Carlisle in the time appointed by Law.
