Arthur John Brown was born in 1889 in Canterbury, Kent. He worked as a dockside clerk.

His family owned a tobacconist shop there and were Methodists. Arthur was also a snooker player and sang in a choir.

In 1912, Arthur married Zella Beatrice Pidduck (b.1890-d.1977; daughter of William Henry Pidduck and Blanche Matilda Rowden) in Whitstable, Kent.

They had 6 children:

Vera married and had 7 children:

Doris married William Roland Allen.

Donald married Barbara and had 12 children:
