In June 1900 the William Dempsey family lived on a farm in the Oxford district of Calhoun County, Alabama. William was 46 reportedly born in Georgia in December 1853. His father had been born in South Carolina and his mother in Georgia. His wife was Merry age 44 born in South Carolina in January 1856. She had given birth to seven children but one had died before the 1900 census. They had been married for 24 years. Children in the home included Walter born in Oct 1878, Bessie May 1886, Mandie April 1888, Eugene Dec 1891, and Josie Oct 1898. (Census enumeration district 37, page 8A)
In April 1910 William Dempsey had a farm in the Coldwater district of Calhoun County, Alabama. He was 44 and had been born in Georgia, his father in the United States and his mother in Georgia. His wife Mary was 38 and had been born in South Carolina as was her father but her mother had been born in Georgia. Mary had given birth to seven children but one had died prior to the census. They had been married for 32 years. Their daughter Josie age 10 lived with them. Also living with them was their son-in-law Charley Mitchel age 30 who had married their daughter Lizzie. Lizzie was 29. Lizzie had given birth to two children and both were living there. The two children were Willie age 9 and Melvin age 6. (ED 6, Page 11B)
In January 1920 Bill Dempsey and his wife Mary were living in the home of their son-in-law Charley Mitchel in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. Bill was 56 years old and had been born in Alabama, his father in Georgia and his mother in Georgia. Mary was 53 and had been born in South Carolina as was her father but her mother had been born in Georgia. Charley Mitchel was listed as being 45 years old. His wife Lizzie was shown as being 38 years old. Charley and Lizzie’s son Willie Mitchel was 18. (ED 20, page 7A)
William Dempsey Claimed by Death Funeral service. William Dempsey. age 80, who died in his home on Route 3 Wednesday afternoon, were to be conducted at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Eulaton Baptist Church by the Rev. Mr. Howcll. Interment was to be in the church cemetery, wlth Usrcy In charge. Pallbearers are Frank Leahy, Charles Fortune, Charles Hamm. Robert Harvey, Bey Morris and Lon Scott, Surviving are two sons, Jack and Walter Dempsey, three daughters, Mrs. Walter Pointer. Rock Run, Mrs. M. Free and Mrs. Josie Blount of Annlston, and three brothers, John of Birmingham and Tom and Lee of Anniston. (Source: Anniston Star, 17 August 1933, page 2)
His death certificate is Calhoun County in Vol 31, roll 3, certificate number 15138. (Alabama Deaths 1908-1959) In it he is named William A. Dempsey.
