In February 1880, one of the most infamous criminals in Danish history, Jens Nielsen (1862-1892), was in London, where he was the man behind several burglaries and a huge fire at the Royal Victoria Dock.
I am trying to trace his route, and I hope someone can help me. According to his unpublished memoirs, Jens Nielsen stayed some days at one of London’s workhouses. He did not remember the address – only that it was in no. 8 and that it was far away from from St. George Street (St. George in the East) where he had been during the day. It was a big workhouse (about 400 beds).
A lot of the London workhouses of that time does not seem to have had house numbers according to the census of 1881 – at least I cannot find one with a no. 8. Can anybody help me?
