My great grandfather lived on Big Goose Creek, about 5 miles from Sheridan when the Johnson County War took place.

Could someone tell me about how many miles away that would have been to where the Johnson County War took place?

I am preparing to write something for my grandson about this historical event which occurred near where his ancestor lived. I need to know how close it actually was in miles so the storytelling will me more meaningful to him.

Also, can anyone recommend a book or a pamphlet on the Johnson County war -- something a 12 year old would enjoy?
