Trying to understand the history of Smyrna

I am tracing my wife genealogy and have come across something that is quite confusing to me. I found my wife's great-grandmother on the 1930 US Census and her country of birth is listed at Turkey. I also found her record on an Ellis Island ship manifest. However on the ship manifest her place of birth is listed at Smyrna, Greece. I do know she arrived on June 10, 1921 and was 27 years old at the time of the 1930 US Census (birth year about 1903).

Now I did some research on the city of Smyrna and it says that the town was invaded by Greece during the Ottoman Empire and the city seems to have changed hand a few time.

So I need some advice. If I am going to try and trace back further should I be looking at Greek or Turkish records? Also, would someone be considered Greek or Turkish then? Thanks in advance for any help.
