I have traced my family to Toogoodoo Plantation in South Carolina. Toogoodoo was owned by Mary Brandford Bull and was willed to her granddaughter Sarah "Sally" Middleton Guerard (wife of Gov. Benj. Guerard). When Sally died her inheritence wen to her sister Mary "Polly" Middleton Butler (wife of Major Pierce Butler). In 1793 Major Butler moved some of the slaves to his St. Simon's Island home in Georgia.
Is there an 1870 census listing for Yonges Island (or would they have been counted with Edisto Island, Ravenel, Meggett, or Hollywood???)
I also would like to know who owned Toogoodoo after Major Butler sold his holdings. I'm assuming that the slaves he did not take with him to Georgia stayed on at the plantation.
My ancestors were (found on a list dated 1775, titled "Mrs Guerard's Negroes at Toogoodoo)
Somersett b. 1740s (blind)
Sue (his wife) b. 1740s
Dorcas b. 1765
Kate b. 1767
Hannah b. 1769
Mollie b. 1771
Peggy b. 1773
Somersett Jr b. 1775
In 1793 Major Butler wrote a letter regarding one of his runaway servants from his Pennsylvania resident, an 18-year-old mustezo lad named Somersett, who had been spotted in St. Croix. I believe this is my Somersett. The Major also had two domestic servants at his PA home named Hannah and Mollie.
Dorcas (b. 1765) and her husband "Captain" and children London and Lizette went with him to Georgia. They had two more children (that I know of) James and Kate. Kate is my gggg grandmother.
