My great grandfather Herman Kemkes came to New York, then Buffalo in 1853 from Prussia. He was born in 1836 to parents Herman Kemkes and Johanna Boenok. He left his parents in Prussia after a break with them and the Catholic Church in which he had been raised. He at some point left Buffalo and ended up in Hanover, Ontario, Canada where the first record of him is in marrying Frederika Christina Prastu in 1868. I can find no record of where he is from in Prussia or what he may have done in the years from 1853 to 1868. He came from a farming family but was a carpenter by the time he first married. Can anyone help me??
