Genealogies of the Bliss family seemed to agree on Samuel, known as Samuel Bliss Senior, born about 04 February 1637 and dying about 23 March 1720 and most of his siblings. His father was Thomas. But where did Thomas’ family hail from? “Genealogy of the Bliss family in America from about the year 1550-1880” by John Homer Bliss and published in 1881 claims that the first Thomas Bliss in this line came from Belstone parish, Devonshire. “Genealogy of the Bliss family in America” by Aaron Tyler Bliss in 1982 maintains Thomas Bliss of Hartford Connecticut was probably a native of Gloucestershire. The Bliss Family History Society of the United Kingdom states on their website, “BELSTONE IN CO. DEVON WAS NEVER THE HOMETOWN OF THOMAS BLISS OR ANY OTHER BLISS. ALL GENEALOGIES BASED ON BLISSES AT BELSTONE ARE MISTAKEN." See:
http://www.blissfhs.co.uk/pioneers.htm. Most of what I find on Ancestry is a mishmash of the two sources above. Has anyone solved this puzzle?
