Notes for George Goldman:
Wiseman-Goldman Book 1972, Page 190 & 191:
Wheeler Goldman son of George and Queen Goldman was never well. He was afflicted with a nervous trouble. He died when he was a young man. George Goldman lost his mind and killed his wife and then killed himself when the children were yet quite young. His son, Jesse, also committed suicide when his youngest son was about a year old.
The Goldman Incident, October, 18, 1894
This event occured the eighteen day of October, 1894. George Goldman, a wealthy farmer of Marietta, just released from the mental hospital *1 tried to kill his wife two weeks ago by cutting her throat with a butcher knife and his son stopped the father. 10/18/94 George beat the head of his wife with a sad iron and a neighbor boy by the name of Nicholas ran to the house. George shot at the boy and then ran into the woods. The boy went for help and they followed George into the woods. They saw George sitting next to a stump. George stood up and put the gun barrel into his mouth and his foot on the hammer and shot himself. Both were buried in the same grave. *2 They were buried the same day.*3
*1 The hospital would have been the Southern Insane Hospital at Evansville, Indiana
*2 Buried in the same graves means they dug two graves side by side.
*3 I question this statement. But under stand the reason, it was not uncommon to have funerals at night during this time period.
Appeared in the 1870 Federal Census enumerated seperate from his Father, meaning he was a "head of household."
