Fred/Willis/Jesse Conn - Mystery

Classification: Query
Surnames: Conn, Nunley, Jarrells
Hello!
My name is Elise Conn, and I have been researching my great grandfather for almost a year now with no luck. He was known by his wife and children as Fred Conn. His youngest son, Walter, was my grandpa. In 1925, he was accidentally killed by his oldest son (Woodrow, 7). While I have found the newspaper headlines about his death, I cannot find any more information about him, other than that he signed his marriage certificate as Willis Conn when he married my great-grandmother Clara Nunley.
This is where it gets strange.
I have current information from Fred's daughter Mary, who is still alive. Fred is buried next to his mother, Virginia Conn, known to be Virginia Jarrells. upon researching my tree further, I immediately ran into a wall. His father was Watt Conn, according to my aunt. This all makes sense until you look at their family tree. Watt and Virginia are buried separately, so this does not help. They do not have any children named Fred or Willis. They do have a child named Jesse...born the same year as Fred...with a son named Vester born to a first wife (a story that my aunt tells me is true of her father). BUT...in every record, Jesse died in 1909 or 1907, and never married anyone named Clara Nunley or had children with my grandfather's or his siblings' names. My aunt Mary also identifies Jesse's siblings as her aunts and uncles, though she never knew any of them well.
I'M STUCK. And I'm desperate for information. I know nothing of this side of my family, and I have been researching it for a long time, and would really like some answers. Any help would be appreciated. The locations relative to the family are Portsmouth, Ohio, SandyHook, Kentucky, and South Shore Kentucky.

Thank you,
Elise Conn
