THOMAS BURTIS (b 1765-1774, d 1816) & HANNAH (1773-1853), parents of JOSEPH BURTIS …
THOMAS BURTIS was b btwn 1765 & 1774 based on the 1800 & 1810 censuses. (1800 - South Hempstead, Queens, NY; NARA film 25, p 75 B [B as in Boy]; 1810 - North Hempstead, Queens, NY, NARA film 34; p 401.) Based on Thomas’ & his wife’s calculated years of b & their son Joseph’s cal b of 1794, believe Thomas m Hannah abt 1793. Thomas d abt Apr 1816 as Hannah was appointed as Thomas’ administratix 27 Apr 1816. (Letters of administrations; Book C, Queens County, NY; FHL film 930752.) Thomas was b in NY state based on the 1880 census listing (Hempstead, Queens, NY; FHL Film 1254917; NARA film 917, p 363D.) of Thomas’ daus Mary Baldwin & Sarah Weekes. Sarah Weekes’ obit indicates her father "hailed from Canada," while her d cert indicates her fa was b in England. (Brooklyn Eagle, 23 Feb 1897, section- none, p three.)
Thomas & Hannah had ten children per the obit of their son, Henry A Burtis.
(
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nynassa2/newspapers/2queens.htm Queens Sentinel, Feb 4, 1892.) Assuming all the children listed in the 1800 & 1810 censuses were theirs, the censuses mention seven children. The names of six are known.
The Methodist congregation in Hempstead was established in 1812. The obit mentioned above of Thomas’ dau, Sarah, indicates her mother was Methodist, & Sarah’s ancestors on her mother’s side as among the original members of the Methodist Church in Hempstead. No comment was made as to her fa’s religion. This suggests Sarah’s fa was not Methodist. A Thomas Burtis was christened 12 Apr 1768 in the Hempstead St George’s Episcopal Church. Parents were listed as William Burtis & Sarah Burtis. Three more of their children – Jane, Sarah & Ruth- were christened the same day. (Adventures for God: a history of St. George's Episcopal Church, Hempstead, Long Island; Haight, John Sylvanus; 1932, p 253.)
In St George’s m records is found: 25 Dec 1725 William Alburtis & Sarah Carmen (m was by license rather than by banns.) (The New York Genealogical & Biographical Record (quarterly), 1882, [vol 13; issue three]; New York Genealogical & Biographical Society, NY, NY, p 140 (on line at FamilySearch.)
Possible “Southard” was the maiden name of Thomas Burtis wife. Southard is mentioned as Sarah Weekes - born Burtis- "maiden" name in her obit. Have found no indication that Sarah was ever married to a Southard. A Daniel Southard is listed in the 1810 census two people from Thomas Burtis.

THOMAS’ WIFE, HANNAH, AFTER THOMAS’ DEATH
1820 census: town not given, Queens, NY; NARA film 78, p 226
Hannah Burtis: males: none; females- one 10-16; one 16-26; one 26-45 (1775-1784); none 45 & over. Combining this info with Hannah’s age ranges from the 1800 (1755- 1774) & 1810 (1765- 1784) censuses, gives Hannah’s cal b as 1774 to 1775.
1830 census
Hannah is possibly listed with her son, Joseph, or possibly is listed on the same p & four lines down from Joseph, (Brooklyn Ward 3, Kings, NY; film 112; p 288.) Both listings include a female Burtis of age 40-49 giving a calculated b of 1781-1790. Three earlier censuses mentioned above render a cal b of abt 1773 -1775. (The children listed with Mrs. Burtis could be Joseph’s children, except the 20-29 year old female, who could be Joseph’s sister.)
In the 1840 census Hannah is not listed with her son, Joseph. Hannah is likely listed with her son Henry: Hempstead, Queens, NY; film 330, p 176. One female age 60-69 (cal b 1771) is listed.
1850 census- Hempstead, Queens, NY; NARA film 583, p 220, lines 17-21; enumerated 29 Aug 1850: All b NY
