I was talking to someone today who said that there is a Veteran's Memorial Marker located in Dahlonega, beside the Courthouse. It lists the names of many who served in the military from the area. She mentioned a WILLIAM T. FORTNER as one of the FORTNERs listed there.

Does anyone know how I can get additional information on this person? I have been looking for my William T. Fortner who served in the Civil War from Pickens County, SC but his burial location is unknown. It appears that he was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia and might have been living there in the 1850 and 1860 census with his father, Jackson T. Fortner and his family. No record of Jackson or his children have been found in any census for 1850 or 1860, but Jackson Fortner and his family do show up in the Pickens County, SC census for 1870.

When Jackson Fortner's son, William T. Fortner died in the War, his remains could have been returned to Lumpkin County, his birthplace. If this could be proven it would solve a very old family question as to where his remains are.

I would appreciate any information on this memeorial there and any additional info on William T. Fortner who is listed.

Thanks so much.
