I have a marriage certificate !1928 and the groom's father (deceased) has the letters M.I.C.E written after his name. Does anyone have a clue what this would refer to?

Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers?
That's what I get when I googled the abbreviation anyway. Does it tie in with his profession?

He was indeed an engineer but it seemed strange that it would be included after his name on the marriage certificate of his son. Perhaps their pride in his achievement warranted it even after he had died?

Absolutely.
When all communication was by letter people were much more inclined to include their professional qualifications etc.
