I am writing a biography of Union army BG Charles P. Stone who converted to the faith around the time of his graduation from West Point in 1845.
I believe that Stone's conversion was at least partly the result of the actions of William Rosecrans, also later a Union general and also a convert.
Rosecrans was active in an organization of Catholic army officers devoted to the Sacred Heart (don't know the actual name of the group) and having the purpose of converting Protestant officers. Apparently, it met with some success.
If anyone has any information on this Sacred Heart group or on the conversion of Charles Stone, I would appreciate an email.
thanks,
Jim Morgan
