According to her obituary, Sarah Jane (RUTLEDGE) HITT was born "near Hagerstown in the state of Maryland" on June 2, 1831 and was the second of three children born to Abraham and Susannah RUTLEDGE. Her parents both died when she was young and she lived for two years with a maiden aunt, Betsy RUTLEDGE. She was then bound out as a domestic servant and married William A. HITT in 1852 near Newark, Licking Co., Ohio. She died June 8, 1919 in Williams Co., Ohio.
