I have a John Tuart Simpson who was baptised in Croft in 1823 - mother was Elizabeth Simpson but no father given. Are your Tuart's in the same area?

Surnames: Tuart, Tuer, Tewart
My ancestor was Elizabeth Tuart who wsa born in Heighington, Co Durham. There are many there but the name spelling alters - Tewart, Teward, Tewert, Tuer, Tuart etc. They also lived in Auckland St Helen's, County Durham and moved between the two places. This was in 1500s, 1600s, 1700s.

The earliest I have come across was Nicholas born circa 1500 and he lived in Wolsingham, County Durham.

Thank you for your post on the Tuart name. My own ancestor was John Tuart Simpson, who was born 1823 in Croft, Yorkshire. His mother appears to have been Elizabeth Simpson and no father is given at his baptism. On his marriage certificate, he names John Tuart Simpson as his father, and I have not been able to unravel this story. Yours is the first Tuart connection I have received.

Sounds as though his father is John Tuart and maybe the registrar added Simpson in error. Croft is not so far from Darlington and Heighington, so could well be related. Have you checked for a John Tuart (and variation in the 1841 and 1851 census returns? Its an unusual name, I've not come across many with this name.
Good luck
