I'm trying to determine if Pennsylvanian Julian/Julius Schalcosky is related to the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The composer had no known children, and I've been unable to locate any nieces or nephews of him who had the Tchaikovsky last name. I've checked the Internet in vain, and was surprised to see that no one had submitted data on the composer's extended to the popular databases. I found some family trees in books but there is no indication of him even having Tchaikovsky cousins.
Also, this is an odd spelling. It is a German derivation. The Polish version of the name is Czajkowsky. There are many ways to spell it, as the Ch sound could be written in more than one way in Polish: C with a mark over is, Cz, Ci... The i in Tchaikovsky would probably have been written as a J. The V would probably have been written as a W, though sometimes it may have been left out completely. The name would have ended in either a Y or i, but occasionally with iy. This results in dozens of possible spellings without even considering possible Americanization of the name. Basically there was no such thing as a correct spelling of a surname before the 1900s, in areas where illiteracy was high. That's why I'm curious if anyone has traced the composer's tree and possibly found that his relatives used a more typical spelling of the name. My eventual goal is to prove or disprove the relationship of the Pennsylvania Schalcosky's to the composer's family.

Hello..
First of all, I can be no help to you, I'm sorry, but, I went online hoping to get info. Anything at all on this family, My son is about to marry a Chaikowsky whose family originally was from Russia to PA/IL.
My future dau-n-law says they are supposed to be descended from the composer's family. We know he has no descendants, but, from possibly a male sibling.
Am interested to know if you have found anyone with information. I would like to be able to give this to my future dau.n law, as a gift. Her Dad is 84 yrs. and lives in the Keys in FL, as does she & my son. Her Dad is 1st generation American, but, one or two siblings were born in Russia. He doesn't know where, nor the spelling of the name before America of his father nor mother's name. Her name: Putalowski or Paulalowski.
My address is: bnesmith4247@hotmail.com
Thank you.
