General queries western europe
Hello everyone,
I asked for this board to be added to the Western Europe category because, due to wars, political conflict, etc., national and regional borders have changed across Europe over the last 150 years and a town or village can be in different countries at different times. Place names too change. And sadly, communities and other groups can be dispossessed and evicted in the aftermath of war.
All this means to research your ancestors, in Western Europe, if they lived in borderlands, you need to know the original name of the place you are researching, what it is now called and which country it is in today, and where the records are held.
I hope this board can be the starting point for anyone embarking on a search for their western european ancestors. Plus of course all other general queries about western europe.

So true! My mother was born in Elsace Lorraine two weeks before WW I broke out, was considered a French citizen since the region today is French.

Re: General queries western europe
Hello, I am doing just that. I have an amazing family tree from my husbands fathers side with names dating back to the early 1700s. I have a cousin in Germany that is a translator by trade.....a true blessing for this project.
Are there suggestions for getting started...sites etc Sharon
