William Henry Zylks and children

Hi Jackie, I have read the posts to your thread concerning William Henry Zylks and his family. I am no expert, but I have done some research on this family; more importantly, I am in contact with some of the other family members who have done a lot of research. J.Lee Ready was kind to send me links to his research, and it has been more than helpful. Maybe, using his research along with my own, I can help you untangle some parts of the story of your grandmother Laura Gertrude.

William was first married 18 Sep 1877 to Virginia Adeline Blue, in LA. I don't know how many children they had. Apparently, "Jennie" died, because J.Lee Ready says: "William lost his wife, and leaving his children with his mother and one of her daughters, he went out west to live with James.... William had a second family in Oklahoma, his mother kept this secret from the rest of the Zylks family at his request. At the age of 77 his mother received a letter from him telling her that his (2nd) wife had died and he had four young daughters to care for. Without explaining anything to the rest of the family she jumped into a horse-drawn wagon with a few provisions and drove to help her son. In 1897 this was an incredible journey at her age for this meant about three weeks traveling alone through wild forested mountains in the heart of the 'wild west', through Texas and the Choctaw Nation, the latter known as outlaw country. The trip was too much for her and she soon died. She was buried alongside the daughter-in-law and grandchild she had never met at Dale Cemetery in Pottawatomie County under the name ‘03819 Grandmother Zylks’." I assume the daughter-in-law was Jannie, the grandchild, Minnie. Grandmother Zylks was, of course, Margaret FAIR Zylks who had come so far to try to help her son and his family.

[Margaret FAIR Zylks apparently had an independent spirit, and a strong maternal instinct. She raised her granddaughter (my own great-grandmother) Eliza Rebecca LAWHON, after Eliza's mother died in childbirth or shortly thereafter.]

Since Margaret FAIR Zylks died in 1897, I assume that Jannie and Minnie must have died c.1897, as well. A post from Jamie Ready says that William and his brother James died after being shot while serving on a posse, was that in 1898?

At any rate, the 1900 census finds the four children of William and Jannie living with Moses Morris and his wife in Cherokee Nation, Twp 14N, R18E. Moses is listed as a white man, his wife is listed as Indian, Moses' children are shown to be part Indian; but William's girls are listed as white, and each is listed as being a "niece". Since they are enumerated white, I presume that they are related by blood to Moses Morris...? Here are their names and birthdates as they are given on the census record:

Zylks, Emeline Niece b.Sep 1889 10yrs IT
, Margaret " b.Jul 1891 9yrs IT
, Gertrude " b.Apr 1894 6yrs OK
, Jimmie D." b.Apr 1896 4yrs OK

In 1910, the two youngest girls are found in the Oklahoma State Home for Orphans in Hogan Twp, Mays County:

Zylks, Gertrude Age 16yrs
, Della Age 14yrs

I hope that this will in some small way help to fill in some of the holes in your research. If you want to know more generations of your ancestry, you should probably ask Jamie Ready to have J.Lee Ready contact you, he seems to be the expert on the Zylks and related lines.
Gertrude may have been born in McLoud, Ok? Her older sisters were born there. Only their father is from Louisiana. Their mother was born in McLoud. The girls are Choctaw, but I'm not sure which side.

My husband's grandpa is Marguerite Josephine Zylks-Ready's son. He told me that Sarah Jane or "Jannie" Robinson and William Henry Zylks had 5 girls: Minnie, Della, Gertrude, Emma, and Marguerite. Sarah Jane "Jannie" died in 1897 along with Minnie in childbirth. William died (along with his brother, James Zylks) after joining a posse after "Jannie" died and both men were shot and killed ( James died a week after William from the gunshot). When the 4 girls were orphaned in McLoud, OK, their uncle, Mose Morris (sp?), sold their parents belongings and put the two youngest girls, Della and Gertrude into an orphanage (in pryor) because they weren't old enough to work. The 2 oldest girls, Emma and Marguerite were brought back to the uncle's farm in Muskogee, OK as laborers. When Marguerite got a job at the telephone company, she went back to the orphanage and got both sisters. Marguerite married Frank R Ready and kaye moved to Tulsa, Ok. My grandpa-in-law tells me William was married only twice. I hope this helps.

My Great-Grandmother was Laura Gertrude Zylks. The story we have been told is that she lived in Louisiana on a Plantation of some kind, her mother died young and the Father william henry zylks couldn't afford/take care of the kids so they were sent to an orphanage in pryor oklahoma where Laura Gertrude stayed until she was grown she was never adopted out. Do you know if there is any truth to this and how many times was william henry married? thanks

I'm looking for information on John Zylks and Josephine Duitt? or Pruitt? Has anyone been able to trace this family back further than that?
ZYLKS: 1930 Census William W. Zylks age 20 Texas Cass Co.

William W. Zylks. Who is this man? Where does he fit in? On the 1930 Census, he lived in the Linden area, Cass Co., Texas. He was single, and a boarder living with a couple named Smith, farming on rented land. He was born in Texas, his parents were born in Texas also. I can not find other Zylks on the 1930 Texas Census, in that area. Maybe he came from Louisiana, Arkansas or another part of Texas. Does anybody know what family he belongs in? Who were his parents, siblings? Who did he marry? Children? I have not been able to place him with any Zylks family. I'm looking for a clue. Thanks, Sam McIntyre Sambobo2@yahoo.com
