Hello Leig and all Zychowski in US,

I’m Robert Zychowski. I living in Warsaw Poland and I’m 42 years old. You must know, that name Zychowski we write in Poland with our special Z with dot behind it and we spell it different that normal Z.

My father Mieczyslaw Zychowski was born in Dulabka powiat Jaslo in 1931 and still leaving in Warsaw Poland.

His father Grzegorz Zychowski also born in Dulabka near Jaslo and died in 1972. He had two brothers – Maciej and Wojciech. Maciej and Wojciech went to US in the same time that Your Mathew circa 1910.
After few Years Wojciech come back to his wife Katarzyna (Katarina) to Dulabka in Poland and after infection he died.
Than, my grandfather Grzegorz married Katarzyna.

Wojciech had with my grandma douther Czeslawa (b.1920), son Walerian (b. 1923) and son Benedykt (b. 1925).
My grandmother Katarzyna with my grandfather Grzegorz had son Stanislaw (B.1927), my father Mieczyslaw (b.1931) and two douthers name Maria. First Maria died in age 5, second Maria still leaving in Katowice Poland.

It is very possible that Mathew and Maciej, there is the same person from our family.

I asked my father and aunt. They don’t remember so many about Maciej. They remember, that Maciej’s wife before married lived in Poland very nearly from Dulabka. Kathrine Bania was born 18 may 1980 in Dzielica Zielce. Every think is OK., but Dzielica Zielec, which is very near from Dulabka – same Roman Catolic Parish in Cieklin.
Cieklin is very interesting place which You can see on page http://cieklin.republika.pl/, where in very beautiful Roman Catholic Church, where is possible to find many information about Zychowski family.
You must know that not popular in Poland name Zychowski is very popular near Jaslo and in Cieklin. There is Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cieklin, where I found more Zychowski names that I ever expect.

Sorry, that my English is not so good, but my national language is Polish.

Best Regards.

Robert Żychowski.

Hi Robert,

Leigh's mom and I are 1st cousins. My sister and I went to Poland this summer and visited Cieklin and the surrounding villages of our grandparents (Maciej Zychowski and Katarzyna Bania). We were able to get information from St Michael's Chiurch in regards to their baptisms.

Maciej Zychowski was born February (Luty) 19, 1889 in Dulabka and baptized February 20, 1889. He was the son of Maria Zychowska--the father is unknown. Maria's parents were Wewrcyniec Zychowski and Marii Ciul~a. His godparents were Michal Jedryczka and Marie Swiatkowski.

Maciej's mom, Maria did eventually marry and it is believed that he has 2 half sisters. We are unaware of what their names were, his mother's married name, or his step-father's name.

Katarzyna Bania was born on May 18, 1890 in Dzielce and baptized in Cieklin on May 19, 1890. Her parents were Wawrcyniec Bania son of Mateuza (Mathei) and Anna Jedryczka daughter of Gabriela. Her godparents were Stansl~aw Kaminski and Zofia Switkowska.

Katarzyna had 2 brothers--one we do not know his name, but know that he wsa killed in Siberia. The other brother was Michaal who came to the United States and married a Helen Furmanek in Chicago. She also had a sister named Anna, that we know nothing about. When Katarzyna came to the United States she lived with her uncle Andrew Jedryczki. Her parents (Wawrcyniec and Anna) were killed in a flood in the fall of 1931. We were not able to locate a grave and were not smart enough to ask the priest to look for death records while we were there.

There were 3 families in Chicago that may have been related (or possibly just friends of the family), they were Swiatek, Zak and Pawel Macuga (my mother's godfather). It is also recalled that Katarzyna would write to families by the name of Putlak and Wiencek back in Poland.

There is a Maciej Zychowski that went to Ohio around the same time my grandfather, Maciej, went to Illinois. It is unknown if he was a relative.

Kindly,
Joan Koch

Hi Joan,

I’m very sorry that You waited so long for answer but I was diving in Egypt without mail connection.
I also waited for information from Cieklin.

There is possible that our Maciej Zychowski is that who went Ohio.

He was born February 23, 1892 in Dulabka. He was the son of Franciszek Zychowski and Jozefa Zychowska – family name Lysiak.

His father Franciszek Zychowski parents were Pawel Zychowski and Zofia Zychowska.

Mother of Maciej Zychowski – Jozefa Lysiak was daughter Piotr Lysiak and Maria Lysiak family name Slusarczyk.

My grandma Katarzyna Zychowska born April 17, 1893 was daughter of Michal Jedryczka and Maria Jedryczka family name Starzec.

So, You see, that is possible that there is the same Michal Jedryczka which was godfather Your Mathew Zychowski.

You were in Dulabka and You know how it look like. I can’t believe that there is no relative between two Zychowski born in same very small village like Dulabka.

If We are sure, that there weren’t same parents and grandparents it’s only make as sure how old our family is.

Best regards.

Robert Zychowski ( in Poland with Z with DOT, which is impossible in US)

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your reply. It would be a lot easier to do ZYCHOWSKI genealogy if records were accessible other than going to or writing to St. Michael's in Cieklin. From the looks of the record books that might not even be possible in the next decade.

It would be interesting and fun to see how far back we would have to go to see the relationship between our two families. I will keep you posted if I find out anything else on my ZYCHOWSKI family. I will also ask my mother and her siblings if they recall any of the other surnames that you have listed in your genealogy.

Please feel free to e-mail directly.

Sincerely,
Joan Koch

My great grandfather lived in Cieklin, Poland and spelled his name Zychowski. It was changed to Zyhowski for those who came to the United States.

Where did you Zyhowski family settle? My grandfather, born in Dulabka-adjacent to Cieklin, used the surname Biernacki when he came over and originally went to Ohio. Within a short time he moved to Chicago, Il.
