Hi,
I descend through Christen Zwahlen (abt 1650 of Wahlern, Berne)/Elsbeth Zbinden line. They are my 8th great grandparents. Anyone connect with this line?

Just wondering... I am searching for a link to my husband's family in Missouri. His Gr grandfather, John Zbinden came here at age of 8 with father, Chris Zbinden. Mother, Barbara Zbinden, died at sea. John settled later in Mokane, MO. I know the family came from the same areas in Switzerland you mention. R Zbinden

Hi Mary,
I am just finally starting to further research my Zwahlen genealogy again and just found your query. My father is Josef Zwahlen from Lengnau, Kanton Bern. His family lived in the Kanton Bern for over 500 years. He was the first to immigrate to the USA. They are originally from Gambach.
Regarding your inquiry of the location of Boltigen -- that is actually where my mother is form (she is a Michel) -- it is in the Central part of Switzerland on Lake Thun in the Berner Oberland where they speak Schwitzerduetsch (Swiss German)., which is definitely not on the French border. But, like most Swiss, we mingle Swiss German with French and often also Italian. For example, the dialect we spoke in Grenchen (called Grange in French) Kanton Solothurn (Soleure) in the north central part of Switzerloand, we mix all three languages in our daily conversation although 75 % is Swiss German. Hopefully that explains a little about your family's background also.

I am descended from that line also. I have it as Christian Zwahlen b.Feb 7, 1654 of Wahlern, Berne, Switzerland/Elsbeth Zbinden b. abt 1656 married August 12, 1675. Swalley is the Americanized spelling of Zwahlen used after the 3 sons of Christian Zwahlen/Elsbeth Stoll came to America.

There is also another Zwahlen family from Guggisberg , Canton Bern, Switzerland. I have attached a copy of her domicile paper she brought with her from Bern, she and 2 daughters arrived here in 1880`s .If you have any info I would love to see it. Zwahlen was her maiden name, Mast is her married name.
Thanks, Marty Peterson
