My great grandfather was Johannes Zwahlen, born, I believe, in the Bern area of Switzerland October 30, 1853. Died in 1881. He married Elizabeth Steinmann Witerfeld somwhere June 4, 1853. I believe his parents were Jakob Zwahlen and Wegmiller. Not so sure about his mother's name. If anyone knows anything about this family, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Perhaps there is a connection to my ancestors...

Jacob Zwahlen was born 28 May 1809 and married on 25 Oct 1833 Elizaeth Catharine Mueller, born 14 October 1812.

They had a son, Jacob born 21 Sep 1821.

I also have info on 4 other children, including Margaritha who was the mother of my great grandmother, Maria Zwahlen.

I have more info if anyone else is researching this line. And I'm always interested in sharing.

Mary,

All I have is that my Great Grandfather was Johannes Zwahlen born 11/10/1819 and died 8/7/1890 in Switzerland. His father appears to be Jakob and I think his mother was Elizabeth Wegmiller. But the names are very hard to read on the records so could be wrong about her name. Johannes married my great grandmother, Elizabeth Steinmann Winterfeld (first husband died) on June 4, 1853. They were married near Berne and lived in a village called Wahlern south of Berne. That is all I have at the moment. Have found more about the other side of my mother's family. If I find anything that I think fits I will let you know. If you think any of what I have would be of help to you I can copy the records and send them to you. My E-mail is OLHLCH@AOL.com. If you want to correspond via email feel free to do so.

Thanks

I wonder if my Zwalens might be the same as yours. I have a GGG Grandfather Johann Jacob Zwalen born in 27 Nov 1814. His father Johannes Zwalen was born 17 Sep 1766 and was married to a Elisabeth Romang. I have information back to 1603 on the Zwalens.

I don't think they are the same as my Grandfather was Johannes born 1/10/1819 and married to Elizabeth Steinman (could have been married before) and my GG was Johannes Jakob married to Elizabeth Wegmiller I believe. Don't have a birth date for him. The Johanne Jacob you have would have been 5 years old when my Grandfather was born.

Oops. I do have Jacob born 21 Sep 1835.

Are you related? My great great grandmother was his sister, Margaritha Zwahlen. Born 29 Sep 1842 Matten, Interlaken, Bern, Switzerland. Died 19 Jul 1901.

My great grandmother was Maria or Mary Zwahlen, born 17 Jan 1868 Matten, Interlaken, Bern, Switzerland. Christened 9 Feb 1868 Gsteig, Interlaken, Bern, Switzerland. And died 14 May 1931 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

Family legend was that Maria came to US to visit relatives in Chicago. She was so seasick that she refused to get on the boat to go home. So, her Swiss boyfriend, Adolf Zimmermann immigrated to marry her. They were married in Cleveland 7 Dec 1891.

I don't think the families are related as mine came from the Wahlern (near Berne) area. My grandfather was Johannes born 10/30/1853 and married to Elizabeth Winterfield nee Steinman. His father was Johnnes Jakob born 1/10/1819. I think he was married to a Elizabeth Wegmiller. So, as far as I can see nothing fits with your Zwahlens. Thanks for your response, however.

My ancestor, Christian Zwahlen b.Nov 21, 1679 in Schwarzenburg, Switzerland Married Elsbath Stoll. They had 8 children. Three sons, Christiam b. December 10, 1710, Hans or Hance b. May 5, 1701 and my GGGGGrandfather Johannes b. bef 1711 each came to America separately between 1735 - 1749. When they arrived they changed the spelling to Zwaller, Zwale & Zwalle to make it spelled in English more like the Switzer-Dutch pronounciation. It Changed to Zwally, Zwalley, Schwalley, Stwalley and Swalley over the next 75 years. I am related to Johannes thru both my mother and father. Also I am related to the Wenger family and have about 12 ties total to the Zwahlen family. I keep all the records I can on all branches of the Zwahlen family, no matter what the location or spelling. I currently correspond with about 100 people who are related to this family group.
The Zwahlen family is descended from the Ancient Celts who lived in the mountains north of Rome as early as 3000 bc. The first mention of them, they were refered to as Z'Wala or Wala, meaning "descended from the celts or of the Celts" it slowly changed to Zwahlen by about 1400. All of the families can be traced back to the same area near Saanen. This includes parts of France and Switzerland. They cannot be proven to all be related to one ancestor, but are from the same group. They have the same characteristics as the ancient Celts as being very tall and fair complected. Many families have migrated to Germany, Austria and France in the past 300 years and there are other variations of the spelling such as Zwalla, Swalla and Schwallie in those locations.
