From Albany, N.Y. Any relations out there?

My grandmother was a Zwack of the Dubuque, Iowa Zwacks who came from Teunz in southeastern Germany (Bavaria) in the 1870s. Her father was Michael and her mother was Walburga Boesl. Michael's father was Andrew (died in 1897 here) but we do not know his mother's name and would like to find that out. I have heard there was a mortuary in Albany run by a Zwack and that they had a painting of Teunz there. Do you know of it?

My grandmother's sister was Kate Zwack of the Dubuque, IA Zwacks. (There must be a connection) Kate's father was John Koenigs and her mother was Kathryn Costello. Kate was married to Joseph Zwack and they had around 10 children. My grandmother was Martha Haubrich (maiden name Koenigs as was Kate's) the Koenigs are who I am trying to find out about. Some of the Zwack decendents may be able to help. Thanks......

Marty, Yes, I knew Kate Zwack and know several of her children now. Her husband Joseph and my father were cousins through the Zwack connection. Unfortunately I know nothing about the Koenigs. What specific information do you want to know about the Koenigs? Do you know the date of Kate and Joseph's marriage? If so, you can write to the Dubuque County Recorder and get a copy of that record which might have her parents' names on it. According to my records, Katherine Koenig was born in 1887 and died in 1970. Her children were born in the years between 1911 and 1928 so she was probably married in 1909 or 1910. By the way, Kate was a sprightly old woman when I visited her in the 60s in a local nursing home. Great sense of humor! Which of her children is your connection?

Marty, Sorry I misread your message first time and you did mention your connection. There are no persons with the name "Koenigs" now mentioned in the local telephone book although there are some with the name "Koenig". Did some drop the 's'? If you go to the surname family trees you will see a Joseph Zwack listed who is married to Paula Smith. He is Kate's grandson. I don't know if he has Koenigs info or not.

My connection is to Kate herself. She was my grandmother's sister her children are my mother's 1st cousins. I don't really know her children, but my mother does and I'm sure she would be interested in any information you have about them. I do know the names of Kate's parents. I have posted messages on the message boards of both the Koenigs Costello names. Her father was John Koenigs mother was Kathryn Costello. I didn't know Kate, but I'm glad to know she lived a good long life. My grandmother was also very spry and wonderful until she died in 1977. Thanks...

Marty, I believe that most of Kate's children are dead, John being the most recently deceased and probably the most colorful of her children. Katherine Callan died in 1982, Joseph in 1953, John in 1998, Zita in 1990, Louis in 1985, Julien in 1992, and Gerald in 1978. Annette is still alive, I think, and is a Presentation Sister. Michael is still alive but I don't know him at all. Daniel, the former Maryknoll missioner, is alive and married, living in the Washington, DC area. I taught Julien's son Dan in sixth grade many years ago--he is now an engineer but I am not sure where he is working or living now. His brother Paul works at the same college where I do, so I can ask. I think your mother might enjoy reading John's obituary which you can locate at the Telegraph Herald online site. I will also try to ask Paul whether or not he knows anything about the Koenigs.

Thank you for all the names yesterday. Some are familiar because of stories I've heard in the family. The name of Julien and the fact that you taught his son was of special interest to my mother. She and Julien were very close as young people. She proceeded to tell me of when he was to be married and she arranged to have his ship buddies from the war attend the wedding. I'm sharing that since you said you work with one of his sons. Anyway, if he knows anything about his grandmother's lineage (Koenig or Costello) that would be most helpful. Feel free to give him my e-mail address. (The "s" on the end of Koenig was my error)

I am a descendant of the Michael Zwack/Walburga Boesl. Michael was from Teunz, Germany. Anna Marie Zwack, born Mar.29, 1872 in Teunz Bavaria Germany, was my grandmother. She married Frank Ignatuis Mihm Oct. 27, 1896 at Sacred Heart Church, Dubuque Iowa. Frank Mihm was the son of Peter Mihm and Barbara Albinger. Does any one have information on Peter and Barbara Mihm?
|
Nancy I have no information about the Mihms but I knew Anna Zwack Mihm before she died at an advanced age. What a sprightly old woman she was! I hope you have heard stories about her.
