My father and I were born and raised in South Amboy NJ. My grandfather (Franciszek) emigrated from Lutcza Poland in ~1903 with his two brothers, Joseph Jan Szczepan. As far as I know, all of the Zrebiec's in New Jersey are descendants of Franciszek and Jan Szczepan. I'm interested in establishing contact with ANY Zrebiec, but primarily would like to contact Zrebiec's living in Lutcza Poland.

Hi,
Saw your message on the surname Zrebiec message board, which included the Szczepan name. My father's name was Michal Szczepan, he was born in 1878 or 1879, in Kakolowka, Poland. His father's name was Franciszek Szczepan, he was born in 1847 in Bialka, Poland. His father's name was Josef Szczepan. Do not have any information on Josef. This information I recently received after sending a letter to the St. Marcin Parish in Blazowa, Poland. By the way, Lutcza is in the Rzeszow area, not very far from my relatives towns. As I was doing my research, I found a Franciszek Szczepan in the Haller Army records, at the time in 1918, he was living in Royalton, a small town in Southern Illinois. In his document when he enlisted he stated his closest living relative in Poland in 1918 was Dominick Szczepan. My father had 2 brothers Antoni Szczepan, and Aloyzy Szczepan (who we lost track of after the 1918 war in France).
Please let me know if we could be related, or if you have come across any information concerning my family. I will do the same.

Thank you, Dorothy Walters

Dorothy,

Thanks for your reply to the message board I started, but I am positive we are not related. In my original posting I mentioned the two brothers of my grandfather. Their names were Joseph Jan Szczepan. However, they were both Zrebiecs (that is, Joseph Zrebiec Jan Szczepan Zrebiec). I believe you interpreted my great-uncle's middle name as a surname.

Sorry if the wording in my posting was confusing. Good luck in your genealogically searches!

Thank you for your prompt reply.
Obviously, I was hoping for a connection, but I will keep trying. Dorothy Walters

What a coincidence! No, I don't know the family Zrebiec, but this morning was doing research for another family from the village of Lutcza.

The Ellis Island web site has a few Zrebiec from Lutcza (in error spelled Luteza and Lutera on the web site) who were going to Estes, NY, Niagara Falls, NY and a Stefan age 24 who arrive 4/27/1905 and was going to his brother Franciszek in S. Amboy, NY.

If you are interested in writing to the old church in Lutcza to find out if there are any family members there or to learn the deaths of your great grandparents, the name and address is Wniebowziecia NMP, Lutcza 698, 38-112 Lutcza, Poland/Polska. If you do write you will need to do so in Polish. There is a Polish Letter Writing Guide on www.pgsa.org and on www.polishroots.org

Surnames: swinicki
my husbands family was from Lutcza poland,we have been researching the Swinicki name for 5 years and only found the passangers list from Ellis Island. His Grandfather was Franciszek and we beleive he had brothers named josef, jan and Francz. We know Franciszek died here and lived in Elizabeth Port N.J.They must have all arrived in N.Y. at that time. Would love to know anything about the Swinicki family, any one who is still there in Poland that is related. His Grandmother is Ludwika maiden name Zelazowska. She died on a ferry boat accident there in Poland. Hope you can help us.

To learn if there are any members of the Swinicki family living in Lutcza or one of the nearby villages or cities it would be best to write to the church/churches in the area and inquire if there are Swinicki among their parishioners.

There are ten Swinicki listed on the Ellis Island web site and it appears 8 or 9 of them can be related. They come from Lutcza (mispelled on the web site) or nearby Strzyzow and all going to Elizabethport, NJ.

There is:

Michael, age 41, arrived 6/3/1903, widowed, from the village of Dobrzechow ( which is near Lutcza and Strzyzow.

Josef who arrived in 1904

Francz, age 49, arrived 11/1/1905 going to a friend in Elizabethport, NJ

Franciszek, age 24, single, arrived 11/14/1905, going to a b-i-l in Newark, NJ.

Franciszek is listed again, age 32, widowed, arrived 8/18/1913. Manifest shows he had been in the U.S. 1904 - 1913. He left in Poland his mother Maria. He was going to a friend Albert Ciuba (?) in Elizabethport. The manifest shows he is from Strzyzow (Lutcza is in the powiat of Strzyzow).

Jan, age 26, single, arrived 4/17/1906 going to his brother Josef in Elizabethport, NJ. Appears he was traveling with eight others from Lutcza (misspelled Luta), one of them listed had been to the U.S. previously (1900 - 1903).

Jan, age 38, married, arrived 11/25/1909 going to his b-i-l in Elizabethport. Left in Lutcza his wife Kata.

Henrik, age 15, single, arrived 4/20/1924. Born in Elizabethport NJ 11/29/1908 d. 11/15/1998.

Lutcza is in the powiat of Strzyzowski (Strzyzow). There is an old church in Lutcza, go to http://spuscizna.org/spuscizna/lutcza.html

If you scroll down to Other Parishes you will see Strzyzow listed, click on that to find the address of the church in that city.

These sites will also have pictures of the old church. When writing to the church write in Polish and remember to use your ancestors name in Polish i.e. Franciszek not Frank or Frances.

Good Luck with your research. Another excellent web site for Polish research is www.genforum.genealogy.com

I am very eager to learn more about the Zrebiec name and any information related to it. I was born in Sydney Australia in 1967. If any one out there could help me with any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
