I am looking for any Zobrist/ Zobrest in the Buffalo to Warren County area from 1880 to 1950.

My Zobrist ancestors are said to come from Brienz, Switzerland, of the lakes area between Thun and Brienzee in Switzerland.

I know it encompasses a lot, but the Gertsch, Zobrist, and Schuman marriages at the turn of the 1900s is fixed in a fine portrait, which my aunt had tucked away. There are other Zobrist and Zobrest familys of Dutch, and German origin, but then that is what the majority of Swiss seem to have as their familys move out from Switzerland .

I only have some odd newpaper clippings and obituarys from Warren County, along with census images that don't connect, yet. If there is someone who has more on these Warren County families, please contact me. I would love to get a solid connection from Switzerland to complete the ancestry of these names. Thanks.

I do know a few things ...

John Zobriest came to America in 1883, and his wife, Anna Gertsch came about 1891, they were married 1893(don't have my notes in front of me at the moment.

If I go by the 1880 census, then there is doubt that My GG Grandfather, John Zobriest is not the same person who is the brother of Jacob Zobriest, but this is the not for certain.

About the only thing I have determined for certain is that Zobriest is from Brienz, Bern cantou, Switzerland. It could mean they are related to other villagers from Brienz,or that their names related to an even more distant releative? I don't know ... herein lies the search to confirm or deny the two familys named Zobrist/ Zobrest?

My only solution is to gather the information on the two familys and wait to see where they connect or do not connect?

I have two important photos of John Zobriest and family. One of just the John Zobriest family about 1913?, and another of Zobriest, Gertsch, Schumann taken about ten years earlier, I guess ... no dates on the originals.

If you have any information on the Swiss roots of Zobriest/ Zobrest/Zobrist, it would be a big help.

Thanks.

My father's mother was Bernice Zobrest b. 1909 Buffalo. Her father was Jacob Zobrest (pro boxer "Iron Jake" in Buffalo and Buffalo cop) who was born in Little Valley, Warren Co. PA about 1876, moved to Buffalo area and married Josephine Donovan, and died in town of Derby, Erie Co. (small town south of buffalo). He was one of 16 kids. His father was Johann of John Zobrest who was born in Brientz, Swiss. in 1828. This John Zobrest married Mary Keller (b. Ireland) and had 16 kids (2 or 3 sets of twins in there). If this helps, great. If I can help more, email me at tcwilliams21@yahoo.com. Good luck.

Hey Gary,
I haven't been able to get Email through, keeps coming back as undeliverable. Must be something with the anti virus block or as some email zones have private companys that do not allow outside companys to enter? I am still interested in pictures and information you may have on Zobriest, sometimes spelled Zobrist or Zobrest. I have planned a trip for the first week of October, 2002 to bury the ashes of my father, William W. Baker in the Warren Memorial Cemetary, and although my van through a connecting a rod and needs a new motor, things still might work out with a bit of luck. I still need to visit as many reletives as possible, so I hope this will all work out. Email me back when I can call you, and we will talk.

Gary, You have to be a cousin. There is no doublt. Your Aunt G. Slocum lives on Liberty Street and is an artist in Warren, PA. I was there the middle of May doing research on the Baker's out in Freehold, and in the Historical Society. I expect to be there again before the summer is out. I had to change email to BrucBaker @aol.com because of a compromised account. So long as my son doesn't compromise it again you can reach me there and I will call you again. I am still looking for information, pictures, and stories of the Zobrist, Gertsch relatives. If you look at the Zobrist/Gertsch family picture, John Zobrist is the spitting image of my brother Lee or John. If I don't find your phone number again, email me back and we will set a up a visit. I don't work anymore, so I have time to get about. I just need rest time for driving as my disability makes one hour feel like three or four hours of work ... makes for a long day. Can't wait tohear from you again. Bruce

Take your time, I am stilll trying to find my
baker reletives around 1800. There are still Zobrists around Warren Pa, but that is a 8hour drive for me, and with the condition of my nerve damage to my balance it would be like a normal person driving 32 hours while having the flu. If you check back with me by email I will update you with the Zobrist I have on file, but are not proved beyond 1850. Keep me in mind if you find something. Almost all Zobrist are from a small town in Switzerland, so we mwy be related a 5th or 6th cousins by Zobrist? thanks...BruceBaker

Zobrist saga

I recently talked to my father, who is 74 year old and had good and bad days with his memory. He remembered that any man born in Switzerland was obligated to serve in the Swiss Army no matter where in the world his family may be located. My great-Grandfather was killed in the great Flu epidemic of 1917 whil serving in the Swiss Army. This could be a clue in some of the male Zobrist who seem to disappear. Not all people were included in census tallys. There were natural displacements and economic factors that moved families. Just look at some of moves we do in present times? I will contact you if I get some more Zobrist info. My relatives, I am told, have a complete Zobrist Chart in Switzerland. Looks like I need to get a copy? I will get back to you in a month or so... Later.
