I am looking for any Zobrist/ Zobrest in the Buffalo to Warren County area from 1880 to 1950.

My Zobrist ancestors are said to come from Brienz, Switzerland, of the lakes area between Thun and Brienzee in Switzerland.

I know it encompasses a lot, but the Gertsch, Zobrist, and Schuman marriages at the turn of the 1900s is fixed in a fine portrait, which my aunt had tucked away. There are other Zobrist and Zobrest familys of Dutch, and German origin, but then that is what the majority of Swiss seem to have as their familys move out from Switzerland .

I only have some odd newpaper clippings and obituarys from Warren County, along with census images that don't connect, yet. If there is someone who has more on these Warren County families, please contact me. I would love to get a solid connection from Switzerland to complete the ancestry of these names. Thanks.

My father's mother was Bernice Zobrest b. 1909 Buffalo. Her father was Jacob Zobrest (pro boxer "Iron Jake" in Buffalo and Buffalo cop) who was born in Little Valley, Warren Co. PA about 1876, moved to Buffalo area and married Josephine Donovan, and died in town of Derby, Erie Co. (small town south of buffalo). He was one of 16 kids. His father was Johann of John Zobrest who was born in Brientz, Swiss. in 1828. This John Zobrest married Mary Keller (b. Ireland) and had 16 kids (2 or 3 sets of twins in there). If this helps, great. If I can help more, email me at tcwilliams21@yahoo.com. Good luck.

I do know a few things ...

John Zobriest came to America in 1883, and his wife, Anna Gertsch came about 1891, they were married 1893(don't have my notes in front of me at the moment.

If I go by the 1880 census, then there is doubt that My GG Grandfather, John Zobriest is not the same person who is the brother of Jacob Zobriest, but this is the not for certain.

About the only thing I have determined for certain is that Zobriest is from Brienz, Bern cantou, Switzerland. It could mean they are related to other villagers from Brienz,or that their names related to an even more distant releative? I don't know ... herein lies the search to confirm or deny the two familys named Zobrist/ Zobrest?

My only solution is to gather the information on the two familys and wait to see where they connect or do not connect?

I have two important photos of John Zobriest and family. One of just the John Zobriest family about 1913?, and another of Zobriest, Gertsch, Schumann taken about ten years earlier, I guess ... no dates on the originals.

If you have any information on the Swiss roots of Zobriest/ Zobrest/Zobrist, it would be a big help.

Thanks.
