Hi my name is Andrea. I have grandparents who came from Slovenia and came to Australia in 1950. My grandfather's name is Martin Znidarsic. He was born in 1919 in Slovenia and died in March 1994 in Australia. I know he had a few older brothers. I can understand what you mean about people not knowing where Slovenia is and people not pronouncing your name. My father has changed our surname to Zindarsic, by mistake actually.
What year where your grandparents born? we maybe related

My great grandmother's maiden name was Anna Znidarsic. She married John Glatch and they lived in Cleveland Ohio where her sons were born. I believe she was born around 1872. When the marriage ended she went back overseas and her husband stayed here and remarried and settled in the iron range in or near Ely Mn. Since the Glatch family originated from the Videm area near Ljubiana I wonder if any of these families on this board are related to my Znidarsic. I would like to know more about her family.

A Glatch

The Znidarsic name is common in the village of Zagorica--where your great grandfather Frank was born. My Miklic family tree is related to the Znidarsic name. This was also a fairly common name in Zagorica. I will look at my research to find a connection. There are many people from the small villages around Videm that came to the US.

Surnames: ZNIDARSIC, SNYDER, OBREZA
Hello, I am researching Frank Znidarsic (b. 1877 in Slovenia, d. 1926) who emigrated in 1902 according to 2 census. He married Maria Obreza in Austria/Slovenia and they had one son named Frank Jr. prior to emigrating. The census say Frank Sr. emigrated in 1902 and Frank Jr. and mother Mary/Maria emigrated the following year in 1903. The family settled in Cambria County, PA, and changed their surname to Snyder.

I have not been able to locate any of their emigrations. I am in hopes that someone may have heard of my Frank and wife Mary, so that I can trace them back to the Slovenia area. Language spoken by them was Slovenian.

Thank you
Teddy Noye

You have probably looked at Ellis Island, but this is what I just found based on the information you have given. Never rule out any possibility until you do further research.
I love the research. I will visit Slovenia next month. If you had a definite birth place and date of your Znidarsic I will look in the archives in Ljubljana. The birth date and place could be on the death certificates. I will also look in the marriage records. I will let you know if anything I might find could be what you are looking for.
This is the only Znidarsic family that I was able to find that was “re-united” in the U.S.
I realize the ages are not correct. The mother's name could have been misunderstood due to language differences at the ship's registration because her husband's name was Franz.

Franc Znidarsic

This Franc would probably have been related to my great grandmother, as she was from Zagorica. I would have to dig into my records for this name as most likely a cousin of hers.

My great grandfather's petitiion for naturalization might be helpful.Anna was born about 1875. John in 1878 or 9. John Glatch (Glac) was the husband of my Anna. The document lists his birthplace as Kacerja. The ship left Breman Germany in September 1898 and arrived in Baltimore Maryland. He did not remember the ship's name. After John's first marriage(to Anna Znidarsic,) ended she supposedly went back to Europe with one or more of their 3 sons. By 1928 the 2 youngest were back in the US and the oldest son also named John was in Zagorica. The census in Ohio where he first lived in 1900 shows John senior married with a year old son John junior. Since John started his second family in 1915 in Minnesota Anna was out of the picture by then. Since his second wife was also named Anna it makes it difficult to find US records with the right Anna.
I don't know if Anna Z died or if there was a divorce.
Anyone know anything?
