My father's mother was Christine Zmud. She married Anthony Surniak. Christine was born in the Ukraine near Vilno (Wilno) Germany. She had 3 sisters - one with name unknown who did not emigrate to the US, Julia, and Emily.

My greatgrandmother Tybel Komisaruk (Komesaroff) was born in about 1869 in Andreyevka, Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine. She was the daughter of Koppel Zmud (Zmood, Zhmudya, Zmudze) who was born in 1838 in Lutzin (now Ludza), Latvia, son of David, son of Falk (born 1797), son of Aleksander Zmud of Lutzin.
I have material from Belarus and Latvian archives.
The family is Jewish and most live in Melbourne, Australia.

My name is Kristin Slusarczyk. My grandmother was from teh Ukraine and her maiden name was Zmud. She and my grandfather met in a slave labor camp and my father was born in Altenstadt, Germany in 1948. They came to the United States in 1951. I would love to find a relative somewhere out there on my father's side. Becuase of the war, my grandparents were torn from their families so I have never met any relatives other than the two of them. I do not know where to begin.

My grandmother's maiden name was Elsie Zmud. The family came to Saskatchewan (farm communities around Saskatoon), as part of the Western Canada land grants program. She may have even been born in Canada, not sure. She married John Gurash and they had a farm in Cudworth, Saskatchewan. You can search the Western Canada Land Grants database. There are several for land grants issued to Zmud's.
